Hi!
Have you ever heard the song " Hai apna dil to aawaara " or the tune of "sholey", you might have noticed that there are beautiful tunes being played on the mouth organ in those songs.... after that have you ever wished that you could also play those tunes... perhaps you thought that due to a lack of proper musical training you were not able to fulfill your desire... So, I will pledge to teach you how to play the mouth organ, only if you really want to learn it....

In the 1950's and 60's, the mouth organ was an extremely popular instrument and many teenagers used to play this instrument. That time came to be known, as the golden era for music, when bollywood's music could be described by the word "melody"... The mouth organ gel very well with melodious and rhythmic tunes. But in these days unfortunately, the mouth organ is becoming an endangered instrument. The reason (i believe) for this is that these days most of the songs do not have such melody, but are ow composed keeping in mind people, who want to shake their hips more and bob their heads less.. ;) there's more of rap coming up(which is basically a guy reciting a poem!) .... But still, some composers have survived this "noise" mania and have composed songs which ring back memories of RD and gang.. I can still find many songs which can be played on the mouth organ like the recent song " pehli nazar me kaisa jaadu kar diya - race ", the tune of "raju chacha" and many many more... and the other reason is that these days there aren't many people left who will teach you to play the mouth organ for free.. I myself searched a hell lot of places for the same, and when i found some, they demanded big money from me and i just said bye bye :) ...

Playing the mouth-organ has been my dream since my childhood, but unfortunately i couldn't find any tutor...... And then on my very first day of college, ( sept 2006) , i was unpacking my bags when i heard someone playing the tune "chhod do aanchal jamana kya kahega" on the mouth-organ.. The sound was coming from a nearby room.. I immediately scavenged my old diatonic harmonica and rushed to that room.... i found a guy named 'Kirit' playing his mouth organ... and that's how i found a tutor and a very good friend :) ..... well he was the one who tought me the basics of the harmonica and many songs too.... today i can play various songs from old films like "hai apna dil to aawara" to recent ones like "pehli nazar se kaisa jaadu kar diya" .. all due to him... thanks kirit :) ...

Recently i searched the internet for websites regarding information about the mouth organ , and i was very disappointed to find that there are very very few sites which offer any coaching at all... and those i found(www.harmonicalessons.com) are totally devoted to western songs... i didn't find a single one dedicated to Hindi music... So i decided to make this website to help those who really want to learn the mouth-organ but unfortunately don't have resources for the same( in short i don't want them to wait like I did ) and also because even i could use the help since I'm not exactly a professional "mouth-organist".... :)

So...... Here goes..... One thing i would like to tell you all is , learning mouth organ is not really tough , if you truly want to learn it , trust me; you can.... :)

From now whatever instructions I give,will be based on the "SARGAM"ie. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha and Ni .... unlike other websites i won't use notations like C D E F G A B, C#,Cb, D#,Db etc... (also, I'm not really comfortable with western notes ;)....) But, if you insist on converting my notes to western notes then u can easily convert them as
Sa = C
Re = D
Ga = E
Ma = F
Pa = G
Dha = A
Ni = B
(more info on this topic later)

But before we go into all this let me give you my suggestions as to which Mouth-organ or Harmonica you can choose ... CLICK HERE TO GO TO NEXT PAGE..

First step to learn mouth organ

Well... According to me, the first step thing to learn wen u play the harmonica is to learn the basic notes...i.e. Sa , Re , Ga , Ma ,Pa ,Dha , Ni, SA(in indian music).. because if you get familiar with these notes you can play any song by yourself...

Which harmonica you should buy?

well.... I won't recommend any particular mouth-organ but you can buy whatever you want... it s a personal thing... In india u can easily find a 24 hole diatonic harmonica as well as a chromatic one. I play both diatonic as well as the chromatic mouth organ ... Both are a bit different since the sound is different. I like the diatonic harmonica because the sound produced by it is wave like but there are some limitations with this kind of mouth organ. one can not play all songs on this type of mouth organ because it does not have the "sharp" or "flat" notes ( komal swaras) whereas in a chromatic mouth organ all notes can be played (with a little practice,of course). The chromatic harmonica has a reedy sound which gives out clear and concise notes ( i prefer the wave-like sound :) )... The starting tunes of a few songs by linkin park(in the end , crawling ) can be played on a chromatic harmonica...

The notes provided in this website will work for both diatonic as well as chromatic harmonicas, but the tunes in which "sharp" and "flat" tones (komal surs) are used can't be played on a diatonic mouth organ .
